How to Restring a Trimmer

May 15, 2012

Restring a Trimmer

It doesn’t take much trimming to wear out your trimmer line. Fortunately, restringing your trimmer is rather easy to do. Each trimmer brand and model has its own uniqueness, but the steps are all very similar to what you’ll find below.

Remove the Head

Some models have tabs you need to depress before removing the head. You just need to press these tabs in and the trimmer head should pull directly down and easily detach from the trimmer.

Other models need a quarter turn twist to unlock. Once they’re unlocked, you can simply pull the head down just as with the tab-style heads.

Thread the New Trimmer Line

With the head detached from the trimmer, you’ll be able to see how the trimmer line was originally installed. Simply unwind the remaining string and find out how it’s attached to the head. Some models require the trimmer line to be threaded into holes, with others you just hook the line around a notch on the head.

If you have the kind of trimmer that uses a notch to fasten the trimmer line in place, fold the new line in equal halfs. Then hook the fold over the notch.

Your trimmer will likely have two spools on the head that you need to wind the line around. Be sure you’re winding the correct direction. There should be an indicator arrow right on the head to indicate which direction you need to wind the line. Wrap both the top spool and the bottom spool at the same time.

Replace the Head

You’re now ready to snap the head back into place. You’ll probably have to thread the ends of the line through the holes on the side of the head mount before actually snapping the head back in place on your trimmer.

Once the head is snapped back in place, give a little tug on the ends of each line to fully extend them.

Fire Your Trimmer Up

You now have a fresh spool of trimmer line and you’re ready to add those final touches to a beautifully mowed lawn.
